Who We Are
The George Akwazie Foundation is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that serves the less privileged and vulnerable people across Nigeria. We exist to restore dignity, expand opportunity, and empower widows, families, and disadvantaged individuals to become independent and successful members of society.
We believe that every person deserves a chance to thrive. Our foundation responds to urgent needs in underserved communities by providing direct support, essential services, and sustainable empowerment programs that help individuals and families move from hardship to stability and success.
Our Purpose
Nigeria faces deep and widespread socio-economic challenges that sustain poverty and inequality:
- Poverty remains widespread in Nigeria, with the latest national data showing that approximately 63% of Nigerians — about 133 million people — experience multidimensional poverty across key areas such as health, education, living standards, employment, and security. This measure reflects a broader experience of deprivation beyond income alone.
- A large share of Nigerians live below the national poverty line, with official figures indicating over 40% of the population classified as poor according to income-based measures.
- Poverty is significantly higher in rural areas, where access to infrastructure, services, and economic opportunities is limited, and where poverty incidence can exceed 70%.
Children are disproportionately affected:
- Around two-third of Nigerian children (about 67.5%) experience multidimensional poverty encompassing education, nutrition, healthcare, sanitation, safe housing, and access to information.
- Half of all multidimensional less privileged people in Nigeria are children, highlighting the intergenerational nature of deprivation.
- These conditions create profound obstacles to well-being and future opportunity, especially for widows, caregivers, and families already struggling to meet basic needs.
